Boston's Free!

Saturday was Bostons third birthday. Jenny had planned an extravagant gathering of family and friends, with bounce-houses, carousels, cotton-candy machines, carnival games, a clown or two...but I made her pare it down to hamburgers, a pinata and some presents. Sorry, Boston, but you got a cheap daddy.

We still managed to have a good time. Boston is a very loved little boy as family and friends turned out, despite the wind, to celebrate with us. We gathered at Ponds Park in Kaysville, a fairly central location for people to come. We planned for a Mickey Mouse theme which, thanks to Wal-Mart, Zurchers and Winegars we were able to pull off. Everyone seemed to have a good time. It was a beautiful day except for the aforementioned wind which caused a nasty chill. I decided I was going to be a man and not wear a jacket. Now I'm suffering from a nasty mix of a cold and allergies.

Boston didn't really care about the weather, though. He'd been bugging us for days about his presents on his birthday. It's a fine line to walk between trying to get them excited about a birthday but not overdoing it. I think we did a reasonable job. The boy definitely knew it was his birthday and loved having everyone around. He played with his cousins on the toys, opened presents, ate some food, got some candy. All in all, a good day for any newly-three child.

We appreciate everyone for sacrificing their Saturday to celebrate our little Boston. We do love him so much and are so happy with who he is becoming. We thank you all for helping him become not only who he is now, but who he will become.

And now, a few pictures:

Boston whacking his pinata. Yes, we forgot rope. Yes, I know the candy would not fall. That was quickly remedied by throwing the pinata in the air once a big hole was formed by repeated whacking. What's that? The pinata might fall on someone if thrown in the air? Like Boston? On his birthday? Oh, well, the candy will make the pain of getting hit with a pinata on your birthday AALLLLLLLL Better!

Boston blowing out his candles. We had to arrange a barrier wall so the candles would stay lit. Even with our superior spur-of-the-moment engineering, the wind was still able to infiltrate our cocoon, so we only managed to get one candle lit. For what it's worth, it was the candle with the "3" on it.

As for the title of this blog, we were driving out to go to a baby blessing Sunday morning as we passed a washing machine on the side of the road with a sign that read "FREE." Jenny and I both commented on it, then Boston blurted from the back seat "Hey, I'm free!" I was sure I had buckled his seat correctly, so I asked him what he meant. He replied "Before, I was two, but now I'm free!"
